September 26, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m. by Bob Erwin, president.

Attendees:  Judy Biegner, Joe Brouillard, Bob Erwin, Brenda Iemma, Bill Lang, Fred Rogler, Bill Shockley

Excused Absences:  Sue Erwin, Kevin Pilkington, Dave Prentiss

The minutes of the May 30th, 2007, meeting were approved, subject to later amendments.

The Treasurer’s report was read and approved.

The Tournament Manager’s report was a joint effort by Joe Brouillard and Bob Erwin.

  1. June sectional:  Bob reported that the unit lost less than $100 on this sectional.  This was positive based on the high cost of renting the site.

  1. Gala:  Joe reported that we currently have 138 reservations for the gala and are at the limit for the site.  Joe requested a volunteer to help move card tables for that day; Fred Rogler volunteered to assist. Bill Lang requested a confirmation on the number of caddies required for the gala.  He reported that he has caddies for the October Sectional.

  1. New site:  Joe informed the board that he had secured a new facility for our sectionals – the Johnston Senior Center – starting with October 2007.  This facility appears to be an excellent site for the future.  Thanks to Doris Salvadore for the reference!

  1. Sanctions:  Bob reported that all of the sanctions for 2007 have been received with 2008 sanctions applied for.  Joe and Bob attended the District Planning Meeting during the Waterbury Regional on Sept. 1st.  Joe will assume responsibility for the 2009 sanctions and be assigned as the unit sectional coordinator after Bob receives the ACBL sanctions for 2008.

Old Business

  1. Mentoring program was discussed and Bob requested a volunteer to take the lead on the program.

  1. Bridge Bits:  Bob reported that the 2007 Bridge Bits were mailed in August.  The delays were due to excessive personal commitments.  The gala flier was enclosed with them.  They were emailed to all unit members with current email addresses.  307 were mailed to members without email addresses

  1. Club Visits:  Bob and Joe discussed a club visit with Bob Garfinkel’s Warwick club on Sept. 12th.  They provided cake and soda and gave the club members the opportunity to discuss unit activities and gave insight into the state organization.  Talks are in process for a visit to the East Providence club.  Bill Shockley volunteered to attend some of the daytime games with Bob.  Bob requested the BOD approve $30/visit to support the cost of these visits.  Motion made by Bill Lang, seconded and unanimously approved.

New Business

  1. Chris DelSesto was proposed for membership by Joe Brouillard.  He was unanimously approved.

  1. Future Gala dates of October 25, 2008 and October 24, 2009 were proposed.  Brenda Iemma will talk with the Imperial Room and place a deposit to reserve the dates if they are available.

  1. The Association tables, bidding boxes and supplies are now stored in Joe Brouillard’s basement to save the monthly storage feel.

  1. Nominating Committee:  Bob announced that the slate of officers recommended for the 2008/2009 Unit 145 Board of Directors are the following:
    1. President:          Joe Brouillard:
    2. Vice President     Kevin Pilkington

    4. Treasurer           Brenda Iemma

Following a brief discussion, the slate was approved for presentation at the Annual Meeting at the Gala on October 6th, 2007
