Minutes of Unit 145 Board Meeting

November 28, 2007

 

 

The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m. by Bob Erwin, president.

 

Attendees:  Brenda Iemma, Joe Brouillard, Bob Erwin, Chris DelSesto, Lou DiOrio, Sue Erwin, Bill Shockley

Excused Absences:  Nancy O’Donnell, Judy Biegner, Fred Rogler, Kevin Pilkington, Dave Prentiss, Bill Lang

 

The minutes of the September 26th, 2007, meeting were approved.

 

The Treasurer’s report was read and approved.

 

Tournament Managers Report

 

The Tournament Manager’s report was a joint effort by Joe Brouillard and Bob Erwin.

  1. October sectional:  Bob reported a loss of $258.68 on this sectional.  This was, however, our first sectional at the Johnston Sr. Center.  Many good reports/compliments were received about the facility.  The I/N game was a success; however, it was held in too small a room.  We need to look at where in the facility it can be held in the future.

 

  1. Gala:  Joe reported that we had a record turnout for the gala – we were at capacity for the event.  We may need to give advance signup for RI members in future years.

 

  1. Sanctions for ’07 and ’08 are all in place.  Bob will be transferring the tournament manager role officially to Joe in December.

 

  1. January Sectional:  The date for the January Sectional has been changed to January 26th and 27th.  It is the weekend between the AFC playoff game and the Super Bowl and, therefore, not conflicting with football games.  Help will be needed on hospitality at this Sectional.  Due to the change in date, lots of advertisement needs to go out on this.

 

  1. There has been interest in a side game on Sunday. After a discussion, it was decided to heavily advertise and run a side game on Sunday at the next three sectionals.  After that, a decision will be made whether or not to continue.

 

Old Business

 

  1. Mentoring program was discussed and Bob requested a volunteer to take the lead on the program.

 

  1. Club Visits:  Bill Shockley and Bob Erwin will be representing the board at a club visit in South County. 

 

 

New Business

 

  1. Lois DeBlois was proposed for membership by Joe Brouillard.  She was unanimously approved. 

 

  1. Officers elected for the 2008/2009 Unit 145 Board of Directors at the Unit gala are the following:

President:              Joe Brouillard

Vice President:       Kevin Pilkington

Secretary:              Suzanne Erwin

Treasurer:              Brenda Iemma

 

  1. Charity for 2007:  Judy Biegner, chairperson, was absent, so this subject was postponed to the next meeting.  Chris DelSesto expressed interest in this action and he will approach Judy before the next meeting.

 

  1. A discussion arose on getting more people to play bridge, especially duplicate, in RI.  Games at colleges were suggested.  Scholarships were suggested.  Various Senior Centers in the state have expressed interest in lessons - Cranston, Westerly, and Johnston.

 

  1. Joe announced that Bob Erwin has been elected Vice-President of District 25 (New England).  Bob announced that District 25 would like to hold a regional in RI and would appreciate suggestions/information on where a regional could be held.

  1. Bob thanked the board members for their support over the last couple of years as president.

 

  1. Reminder:  There will be a side game on Sunday at January’s sectional.

 

  1. Bob turned the meeting over to the new President and he accepted a motion to adjourn – seconded and passed.
